This was an excellent adventure and I fell in love with many of the characters (Bran!!) and developed a hate relationship with others (Cersei). I am a detailed person but I think that this story is sometimes a little more than my poor brain can take. I loved all the kingdoms and characters but I admit that I felt a little overwhelmed trying to tie the relationships together. The kingdoms have a rich history and it would be good to have more absorbed into my memory. I admire a writer who is ...more

2016: I forgot how quickly shit hits the fan when it comes to George R.R. Martin. One moment you are all warm and cozy, because all of your favourite characters are still around. Next thing you know you are standing knee-deep in bloodshed. Well, that reunion lasted long...

I would have given this book four stars had it not ended suddenly, leaving most of the story threads dangling and with the very ending feeling completely out of left field and not fitting with the rest of the story.
That said, it's a good, fun read. I had been planning on reading the next book but now that I know I can't count on a real ending to that one either, I'm a bit less eager. ...more

This is certainly a new leap for me in the fantasy genre. It's more modern in flavor than The Lord of the Rings but in some ways is more realistic. There is enough spellcasting and mystery to make it mystical, but enough war and intrigue to make it interpersonally interesting. I am curious to see where the rest of the series will go, although be prepared for a lot of reading... this book alone is nearly 700 pages!
