I loved the familiar satirical tone, and some of the narrative devices, such as where the narrator pretends to be moving in the same circles as the reader, and so goes on gossipy tangents about mutual acquaintances. I loved the contrast between the sharp-witted anti-heroine, unscrupulous Becky Sharp and the angelic if slightly simpering Miss Sedley. I finally finished this book! I had promised myself years ago to read this book because I was going through a phase to read books just because of how long they were.
I read a combination of audiobook and physical book and it took almost an entire year to finish.
My verdict? Meh, a boring story.
Because this is a novel without a hero, I was not surprised I did not like any of the main characters. But the story dragged so often because I did not often care what drove the characters or if they obtaine ...more
