"I've spent enough of my life in this play," Thackery writes through the voice of a character, about halfway through this novel. And therein lies the rub as the jokes/events are too oft repeated. One of them appears in what seems like dozens of variations: A woman loves her husband best in public.

Despite discovering some great modern books recently, my heart belongs to those friends of my youth, the chunky 19th century novels. So it was both a joyful and a comforting experience to read this long deferred classic of Thackeray's.
