Where The Hobbit (still recommended) lacks, LOTR makes up for it. The first book of the series starts off slow as you are introduced to the peaceful world of the Shire then drawn into Gandalf's mysterious plans. As a character, Frodo grows from one book to the next becoming more complicated along with the plot. This series is "a lot of walking and talking," but it is done masterfully.
