What Members Thought

People say that The Stand is King's definitive work - the monument to his genius as an author, his Magnum Opus. But I can't help comparing it to his other monster of a book, written sometime later - It, - and find it diminishing in its splendour. The quality of writing is top notch, but still does not evoke imagery as vivid and terrifying. The characters have their distinctive voices, but again, not as developed and complex. This was my first foray into Stephen King. I'll admit, I avoided him for awhile because of his reputation for the horror genre, which is not my thing AT ALL. This, however, was more of a supernatural sci-fi thriller, which is more to my taste. The good vs. evil bit was played out well with some very memorable characters and some interesting "what if?" scenarios.

Kempe: ”You know what’s really scary? Getting sick while you’re reading the first part of The Stand. Just try running a fever,...” Reading about the daily advances of the Ebola virus in the news papers along side reading the first 300 pages goes well for a good scare too. But the end.... is that an end? It is like he never really planed the book to end, but just ran out of paper. I give it 4 stars, but the tiniest 4 stars possible.
