Wow. It's just wow. Read it. There's not much anyone can really say about it besides to tell you to read it because it's amazing. It's heartbreaking and beautiful and I don't really think it should be named after the character of Anna Karenina but, it's amazing and that's that. ...more

Wow. I’ve put off writing a review for almost 2 months because I don’t know what to write. Good cautionary novel. Great writing. It reaffirmed why I love Russian authors. Tolstoy is so aware of the human mind and I often thought “how does he know exactly what a woman would be thinking and feeling in this situation?” He’s a master! One of my favorite books now.

After failing miserably as a teen to finish Crime and Punishment, Russian literature for the most part has always remained something that I would get to later on. Especially Tolstoy and his two monolithic tomes War and Peace and Anna Karenina looming on my shelf intimidatingly. Many times I have gone to start my copy of War and Peace, and always I have shied away at the last minute, mainly from the fear of having to print out a character map just to memorize so many long russian names that I am ...more

I have spent most of this year trying to wring out every truth, every grain of wisdom, and every word of meaning from this rapturous beauty but I still feel like I’ve barely grasped the superficial. Anna Karenina is a world unto itself. It left me feeling like Tolstoy delivered this gift directly to me so that I may uncover some cosmic secret of human nature.

(That’s probably a terribly cliche exaggeration but, you’ll have to forgive me, I’m still on a high from finishing it an hour ago.)
