First of, if you ever plan on reading this book, you should get the Folio Society edition. It's a marvellous piece of work with participation of many of the Pasternak Family. With paintings and sketches by the author's father, and translated by his nephew with introductions and other bits and pieces by other family members. Don't even bother with anything else.

The influences from Tolstoy (a family friend) are clearly felt: the book feels like a continuation of Tolstoy's epic novels, spanning ove ...more
