A Little Life in Reading the Chunksters

It was just so sad. I was so scared to read this book because so many people have said it's the most depressing book of all time and Yes now I can confirm it is!

Thoughts while reading: 50 pages in and I was already sad. I have a huge love for Willem, I loved him and though he was amazing! 150 pages in and I wanted to cry, I wanted to grab Jude and take him somewhere else. Jude is precious. it w I have finally finished this, it took me so long to read because of the content more than the length! It was just so sad. Jude is precious. it was so sad to see that he used to be so rebellious and they literally beat him and abused him till he was just passive. i had so much love for this group of friends at the start. I would smile uncontrollably. I love how they called Jude Judy! The part about Caleb was absolutely terrible to read. I had to stop multiple times. I have never hated somebody so much, what a terrible person. Poor Jude. I can't deal with this, brother Luke is terrible, he makes Jude be raped by all these pedophiles. How can something so terrible happen to one person. This book is making me so sad. I've thrown it across the room. It's so hard to read because everything that is happening is terrible but I can't stop reading and I can't stop thinking about it. When Willem and Jude got together I just wanted to cry of happiness! They both deserved happiness and Willem is perfect for Jude! I love Willem! He has so much love and patience for Jude. Jude deserved the love but it can't be easy for Willem to be so understanding and patient like that! Jude frustrated me so much, I just wanted him to trust Willem! When it talked about how the counsellors abused and raped him and how Jude had to sell himself while he was on the run I thought it was a bit unbelievable, can so much horror happen to one person? Can one person be raped by nearly al men he meets till the age of 15? Everything was going so well. Then Willem dies in a car accident. I can't. Then end of this book. I can't deal with the end to even put in to words. Bye. ...more

The story stays with you. Not entirely sure how to feel about all of it. I will say it’s a surprisingly quick read considering how much of a giant it is. Maybe the best thing about it are the depictions of love in friendship. A picture of a life centered around maintaining those relationships and loving each other through different stages of life, instead of just having kids and getting married.

This book was one of the most "real" books I've ever read in my life...I really feel like I know and have loved all of these characters. The prose was simple, but draws you in immediately. I would only have to read several sentences each time I picked this up in order to feel like I was no longer reading, but sitting in the room watching what was happening.
