1978. What inappropriate books was I reading the year I was eleven? Let's see: Scruples, Punish the Sinners (ugh, gave me nightmares), The Other Side of Midnight,Valerie Sherwood and old Harlequin Romances. Throw in the odd Nancy Drew and Judy Blume book (including a smuggled copy of Forever) and you can see how I ended up as such a twisted adult.
Anyhow, I gotta say I never saw this book lying around anywhere back then. I did read S ...more

This book is bizarre but so well written that I gave it 5-stars. This is a very dark book. The hero was not loveable... he was crazy and evil and the heroine was weak and helpless. I didn't feel warm and fuzzy after reading it but I'm glad I did.

And I be like:

It's a relic from the bodice ripper era...what did I expect?
Wasn't all bad though. The story being told in 1st person was completely different than any other bodice ripper I've read and it actually was fine. I don't know why, but the ebook version I read somehow had the book in it twice - meaning that as I came to cross the 55% mark, the book was suddenly over, and I'm distraught and incensed. How dare this book end before I expected it to! Why??? I was looking forward to reading the rest tomorrow, and instead, I'm left with a lonely feeling and no more Teresa Denys books left to read. Nooooooo! T_T

It's hard to really categorize this as just another bodice ripper because it's not cheesy...in fact, it is incredibly dark and twisted at certain points. Domenico takes his obsession/love for Felicia to the point of literally killing anyone who gets too close to her or gets in the way of their relationship even indirectly. This is not your run of the mill alpha with a heart of gold story. This guy never redeems himself or changes.
