This is a well reviewed and acclaimed first novel.
It is a beautifully told story of a socially disconnected young woman leaving the care system in the USA. The story is told in 2 separately running narratives that are interwoven but never brought fully together until the closing chapters. This adds to reader's desire to understand how this woman relates to her world as an adult by finding the truths in her past.

The author's experience with children in the foster care system comes through clearly and the character of Victoria, the protagonist, is well drawn. Her heart-breaking tale gripped me and I was cheering for her while anxiously turning each page. When I finished reading, I smiled and felt satisfied--a feeling I rarely have with many contemporary novels. ...more
