This book starts out funny, but veers into mild horror, swings back into funny, and then, in my opinion, falls off a cliff. I don't like the ending, but I stil recommend it.
The author took a bunch of strange vintage photos and made a story to fit them. I like the characters; they come off as confused and well-intentioned, realistic, in other words. ...more

Jacob's grandfather used to tell stories about his own childhood in the children's home amongst the children who had unusual abilities - and about the monsters which have always hunted him. Now that Jacob is a teenager he no longer believes those stories, but, of course (otherwise we wouldn't have a plot here, now would we?), now he may have to rethink his ideas about the stories and try to actually find the home his grandfather grew up in.

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children is a bizarre experience. Using real old photographs for the characters and the strangest of plots, Ransom Riggs has achieved a truly remarkable debut novel. Not just in the story telling, although that is great, but in the whole package of a book, in the careful choice of end papers, chapter pages and the old photographs – the whole is a complete and satisfying experience.

Neither as bad as I feared or as good as I had hoped.
I was a long-time fan of Ransom Riggs' Strange Geography blog on Mental Floss before he resigned. But I have to admit, I was a fan mostly for the strange and spooky photography, both vintage photos and modern. The text of the articles never truly impacted my opinion of the blog one way or the other.
In this book, however, there's not enough photographs to carry the story by themselves and Riggs' prose is not well developed. I'm glad I read the ...more
