"Walk careful, bread girl. Little people like us, we're not safe these days. Watch your back."

Young Mona has a way with bread. She can keep it from burning, or make it taste fresher (or staler, if need be.) She can even make gingerbread men dance the can-can. 'Cause she's a wizard, you see. A 14-year-old wizard who's about to have her life turned upside-down.

As wizards go, I'm pretty much the bottom of the barrel. Even Master Elwidge, who's got just enough magic to take knots out of wooden boards, is better than me. Dough and pastries are about all I can do. The great wizards, the magi that serve the Duchess, they can throw fireballs around or rip mountains out of the earth, heal the dying, turn lead into gold.

This is a fun middle grade about a young magical baker who is accused of murder, and then becomes entwined in a plot to kill all magic folk and take over the city. I liked the characters and magic system, but I didn't like the stereotyped way everyone treated a central secondary character, and the plot kept feeling like it had to start and stop again and again. Not my favorite T. Kingfisher, but I'm sure many will like it!

The audiobook was great. I really like the narrator's voice.

Šašavo taman kol'ko treba, zabavno, zanimljiva magija, taman onoliko mračno da klincima bude super-interesantno a da se odrasli isprepadaju za njih. ...more
