I am having a hard time writing this review. My thoughts about this book are so scattered that I feel like my head is a kaleidoscope and my feelings are like patterns that change with each shift of logic. At first there was a sense of mystery and then there are constantly changing view points giving insights into different era's and different characters, each having their own story to tell and each solving a piece of the puzzle in their time. Not really a thriller, but definitely a mystery, this novel is part historical fiction taking place in the early 1900s, 1970s and early 2000 and covers the lives of 4 generations of women. One of the characters is a fairy tale author, so even though it is realistic fiction, it is definitely fairy tale influenced. The writing is very engaging and evocative. I would definitely recommend this novel and read other books by the same author.

To be fair, the language was lovely in places, but the story in itself disappointed me thoroughly. I knew early on who the girl in the boat was and the ending didn't surprise me one bit. What I did love were the references to Burnett's Secret Garden (I'm a big fan).
