This was a lovely book. Although short, it was a full meal, rich with humor, magic, the struggle between good and evil, and a nice little romance.
Aren was a great heroine. You see her go from meek and frightened to powerful and independent in her own right. Ms. Briggs excels at writing loveable characters who I care about, cheering along as they grow, and as they fight the good fight. Patricia Briggs is an amazing writer, and "The Hob's Bargain", although one of her earlier works, clearly shows her talent with character development, world-building, and the story's pacing.

Being a fan of Briggs' Mercy Thompson and Alpha & Omega series, I thought I'd try out something from her back catalogue of fantasy, and although I liked the story, it felt rushed, sometimes dry, with characters that needed fleshing out.
I can see that Briggs has made huge progress in her writing style since this one, but on the whole it was a little disappointing to read something below the level of quality I've come to expect from such a great author. I hope she one day revisits and updates this ...more

The Hob's Bargain combines elements of mythology, fairytales, and coming-of-age stories that was exactly the sort of thing I needed to read right now.
