Whatever the other mother is - spider? or beldam, it likes little girls - be they winged or without, and little boys who lived long ago enough that it was fashionable to dress them in dresses and let them have long hair until a certain age.

Coraline's name reminds me of Persephone she was called Kore - or in Latin, Cora, it's meaning is 'maiden, daughter'. Her adventures in the other mother's world certainly calls to mind the dark and strangeness we feel about shadows and death.
