Daughter of the Forest by Juliet Marillier is one of my all-time favourite books, that I like to re-read every few years. A retelling of the ‘Six Swans’ fairy-tale, set in ancient Ireland, it is a beautiful story of courage, love, peril and wonder set in a world where magic is only ever a hairsbreadth away from us all.

Juliet Marillier brings historical and mythical fiction together with admirable skill. She is masterfully sensitive to the subtleties of of language.

Before I was even done with this book, I ordered paperback copies of it and its two sequels so that I could have them all. I don't do that for just any book, you guys. This was beautiful. And harrowing, and cruel, and heartbreaking, the way fairy tales tend to be, but most of all, beautiful, in the simple and honest narration by young Sorcha, Irish daughter of the fairy-magic-tinged forest from many a century ago. It has been a long time since I've read such a beautiful, lyrical fantasy novel. Just wonderful from start to finish! I can't wait to read more of the series.
