2025 re-read: i'm gonna have to call this as on hold, for now. i'm just not picking it up. my guess is the re-read urge will come back around when the second movie comes out again.

A fresh, masterful weaving of a favorite childhood tale. Filled with political, societal, and religious commentary, this story of the origin of evil and what it means to be human is entertaining and food for thought. There is so much to digest and so many laters to this novel. I feel it deserves another reading and look forward to the other books in this series. Elphaba is a witty and wonderful character. Well done, Maguire.

This actually deserved a 2.5, but not a 3.
The book started out fabulously but didn't stay that way. My main problem is the politics/religion: The entire system and history was too involved and without the proper development, it just became confusing. I did like most of the characters, though, and probably won't be able to watch the 1939 version of the movie again without calling the witches by Maguire's names. ...more

This book was perfect IMHO. I loved it. This book was brilliant and witty with plenty of food for thought.

I can't believe that such a wonderful Broadway show was based on such a boring piece of literature.
