Either a high 3 or a low 4. I can't quite decide.

I really like the additions Kingfisher/Vernon has made to the tale. In particular, that there's no father figure offering up their daughter as a sacrifice, and that they valued Byrony for her gardening skills and not just for her being a marriageable female.

Me before reading this book: Oh, this will just be a cute fairy tale retelling. No biggie.

Me after reading this book: How does she do it? Why do I always want to have lunch with Ursula Vernon every time I read one of her books?? It's not just the self-deprecating humor of the heroine. It's a sense of curiosity about the world and the idea that women have interests and obsessions too. ...more
