The thing about Star Wars is you'll never expect what might happen in the span of a few hours in the tides of war. But what happens if the true fear residing in you is solely represented as death's kiss slowly engulfs you to eternal, blood-filled slumber?

And boy, you'll never expect the "scream bloody gore" fiesta Joe Schreiber pulled off with his debut Star Wars novel, Death Troopers.

The book follows two brothers (Trig and Kale Longo), a doctor and her medical droid (Zahara Cody and Waste), and The thing about Star Wars is you'll never expect what might happen in the span of a few hours in the tides of war. But what happens if the true fear residing in you is solely represented as death's kiss slowly engulfs you to eternal, blood-filled slumber?

And boy, you'll never expect the "scream bloody gore" fiesta Joe Schreiber pulled off with his debut Star Wars novel, Death Troopers.

The book follows two brothers (Trig and Kale Longo), a doctor and her medical droid (Zahara Cody and Waste), and a prick captain of the guard (Jareth Sartoris), aboard an Imperial Prison Barge named Purge. After getting stranded in the Unknown Regions of the galaxy, they find refuge in an abandoned Star Destroyer floating in the nowhere, which might hold their hope for help- until only a handful of survivors from the search party return, bringing with them a killer disease that kills and reanimates everyone aboard the vessel. But in deep space, no one can hear you scream. And the dead are definitely scary as frag here. For something that's purely science fiction/horror cliche, that fat cliche is tossed to the blood vat, and behold- you get this novel for a start.

The thing that makes Death Troopers oddly amusing is the use of horrific gore imagery that captivates the inner horror movie fan of yours deep down- most especially the death sequences which make up at least 1/2 of the book's entire premise. I also liked the appearance of a certain smuggler-nonhuman duo in the novel, which makes them quite sound comic reliefs adding to the grim tone of Death Troopers. The delving of (Joe) Schreiber in the human nature of survival instincts are killer good. The novel has the feel of "Lord of the Flies", "Alien" and "The Shining" patented into it- but added more blood to the usual amount.

So if you enjoy severed limbs, bloody heaps of red splashing to the floor and the usual visceral torture of hapless humans, with the added bonus of the Star Wars saga, you'd definitely give the novel a one-up look and read.

P.S. The novel is good for reading with death metal. Lol.

I really enjoyed this attempt at bonding STAR WARS with HORROR. The story was very enjoyable and fun to read. It was exciting and thrilling. The characters were a bit stale but the story justified it. Stry was edgy, dark, gritty, and exciting! I would recommend it to all STAR WARS fans. The old LEGENDS (EU) was so much better than the new CANON. Ignore disney's trash and explore this awesome era! ...more
