That's a name I haven't heard in a long time....A long time...

Kenobi by John Jackson Miller was a fantastic read. In my ongoing quest to sort through the Star Wars canon and expanded universe novels, Kenobi was one I was looking forward to getting to. I picked this up along with a couple of other new novels and binged through them over the span of a week, and I have to say, this was worth the purchase.

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, John Jackson Miller created a novel that oddly resounds as a Clint Eastwood spaghetti western set in Tatooine starring our famous Jedi exile Ben Kenobi.

Kenobi packs the mystery of our favorite Jedi and honestly, this is a good cup of coffee.

Set in the (non-canon) Pika Oasis in the Jundland Wastes, Kenobi centers its story on the Calwells, Jabe, Kallie and their widowed mother Annileen. Kenobi packs the mystery of our favorite Jedi and honestly, this is a good cup of coffee.

Set in the (non-canon) Pika Oasis in the Jundland Wastes, Kenobi centers its story on the Calwells, Jabe, Kallie and their widowed mother Annileen. Like in any spaghetti western, they are the center of the movie or novel they're in, until their whole lives turn upside down when meeting an outlandish character in the form of the Man With No Name, er, Ben.

Ben, a man with a not-so-known past, is actually the Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi. He's obviously hiding in Tatooine from Palpatine's iron rule and guarding an infant Luke (despite his statements of Owen Lars hating him around the field), although he's seldom open to discuss himself to the Calwells.

Enter the Gaults, the not-so-friendly protectors of the oasis. Orrin, together with son Mullen and daughter Veeka, treat recent arrivals with summat terror, fear and more summat you can't possibly explain.

The supposed "bad guys", The Tuskens are also present here. With their war leader A'Yark, a character you can possibly love or despise, the raider brings forth trouble stirs in the background, and you can actually think they're the Cowboys from Hell sort of thing in the first half of the story.

I like how John Jackson Miller was able to peak Kenobi's story with the western twist of the Tatooine dunes. From a Star Wars fan's point of view, this novel is perfect for the people who love the sandy plains of the planet Tatooine, in which J.J. Miller makes a perfect imaginable landscape that's quite a breathtaking experience to behold and see, and of course, the point of view from the Tuskens create that real jibe between the good and confused egos of its protagonists and antagonists. The complacency of Kenobi in the story hits a tart spot in the long run, and every scene he's in, he'll either amuse or bewilder you with how the heck he manages to keep a straight attitude when the entire scenery goes awol.

What you wouldn't like in Kenobi is that it's quite confusing to digest as a whole. The Calwells are the main characters yet Ben (Kenobi) is the one who's shining, and the Gaults somehow are forgettable. The novel is both amusing and dull, although most of the good stuff outweigh the bad stuff, so it wouldn't be a problem. At all.

If you were an early fan of Clint Eastwood or any of the Roland Deschain books, add Kenobi if you're a Star Wars fan. The entire novel is enjoyable while it lasts. \m/

Had high hopes for this book. It was pretty boring. As much as I wanted to like it more I just could not get excited about it. In I wanted it to go some many better ways than it did, it just is a let down. Well written, just a snoozer.
