I picked this book up at B&N a day or two after it was released while on a vacation in Maui. People often say that you remember first. Well, that was certainly true here. Scoundrels was my first foray into the Star Wars expanded universe. I had heard a lot about Zahn's writing and his epic Thrawn trilogy (edit: and read them not long thereafter; see them here: Heir to the Empire, Dark Force Rising and The Last Command).

I thought this was a pretty good novel. It's very descriptive and elaborate in its storytelling. I wouldn't say that this is essential Star Wars reading, but it does tell you why Han didn't pay off Jabba after Ep. 4 and why Lando has a little anger toward Han in Ep. 5.

So it gets an extra star for the very cool (surprise) ending but otherwise this was a rather dull read! It didn't have the exciting feel of the Star Wars universe and I didn't feel this had anything on Zahn's earlier EU novels that I had previously read.
The main let down for me was Han and Chewie and the way in which they were written in this story. It just didn't feel as if the characters I was reading about in these pages were the same 'scoundrels' from the trilogy I had watched and loved from ...more
