I haven't played nor touched a single strand of the Old Republic games, but I've heard a lot about Revan, and him being one of those supposed "Grey Jedi", but I decided to take a hitch on this book, without knowing what I am about to expect.

KOTOR 3?

Not really. But good none the less.

Revan, by Drew Karpyshyn is a follow-up book from the Knights of the Old Republic video games and a bridge to Star Wars: The Old Republic MMO game. The story revolves around former Sith Lord turned Jedi Knight, Revan, on a quest to recover more of his lost memories and uncover the identity of the secret Sith Emperor who had turned Revan and his friend Malak to the Dark Side of the Force years ago.

Let me start out by saying I know some people like this book, and a lot of people don't, the latter of those people who don't like it I can understand their reasons. This book doesn't do much good for the character of Darth Revan and it could feel as a cheap media plug for the The Old Republic MMO as well. I'm a big fan of KOTOR and SW:TOR, and I love the character of Darth Revan, one of my favorite Expanded Universe characters, and I have to agree that this book is a little underwhelming and comes off a little forced at times to bridge the two games and continuity together.

That is honestly my biggest discrepancy for the book is that the title character is kinda weak in the story. Which is most unfortunate. It's also probably the biggest problem a lot of people had with it, which is super understandable.

However, I've read it twice and I have to say it's still a decent story and it's probably as close to a Knights of the Old Republic 3 as us Star Wars fans are ever going to get. I like the story of uncovering the Sith Emperor's identity, and the dangerous journey Revan and his crew takes to finding him as well before he can rise to threaten the Republic. Logically if I may say so, I'd always imagined if there were a third game in the series, Revan would've gone after the mysterious Emperor along with his friends to defeat him and the Sith Army.

Besides all that, I'd say give this book a chance. It's nothing spectacular, but it's nothing terrible either. It's just good, and a little fun. Some of the other characters from the games are written alright and have some nice moments and interactions, and the action and plot are pretty solid as well. ...more
