Recommend to: Obviously people reading the NJO series. This is the best book of the series so far. The only competition is Vector Prime.
I don't think newer readers to the EU can appreciate how mind-blowing this series was when it came out. It has plenty of faults (you can read any of my reviews if you want to hear me listing them off), but this series was an order of magnitude or two darker than what we would typically get out of a Star Wars book. I'd be lying if I said that I liked everything that happened in the book, but in all, Troy Denning did quite a good job on this volume of the New Jedi Order series.
Characterization is good. I've asked some prominent authors what they like to do in order to add some good character development, and they have said that they torture their characters. A pretty major turning point for multiple reasons in the whole New Jedi Order saga. I didn't realize going into it just how epic this book was, but it was definitely memorable -- both in the content and in the size of the book (600+ pages paperback). I'm very much enjoying the series so far.
