Star Wars: Dark Apprentice (The Jedi Academy Trilogy, #2) in The Expanded Universe

2 Stars. Given up on this one.

I actually defended Jedi Search against the critics because I felt that many people were too harsh on it. Even though it had many, many flaws, it was entertaining at least.

This book however... Everything bad about the first book is multiplied and everything good about the first one is gone.

- Luke is made into a complete moron who, even after his student tries to kill him and all but admits he's learning the force from the dark side, Just gives him back his light sa 2 Stars. Given up on this one.

This book however... Everything bad about the first book is multiplied and everything good about the first one is gone.

- Luke is made into a complete moron who, even after his student tries to kill him and all but admits he's learning the force from the dark side, Just gives him back his light saber and let's him carry on his way. Still oblivious to his dark side.

- The author still doesn't know what to do with Leia. She's kind of just there.

- The characters all feel like they're given a story of no relevance for no other reason than the author felt they should be in the book. Why is Lando here? Why is Wedge here? I don't know but they are so give them something lame to do to fill in some pages.

- The dialogue is horrendous. Luke and C3PO are still the worst offending characters, but all of it just sounds wrong when reading.

- Instead of 15 pages of blob races, this time we get downhill skiing with Han and a ridiculously long Sabaac game with Han all in the same chapter. 25 PAGES of nothing but Han skiing and playing Sabaac. Oh the excitement. Zzz

- The characters are nothing. The Jedi academy... I mean I don't even remember any of the characters and I've read 500 pages of these books. The Imperials, The Rebels... All just names that speak. No personality and no differentiating voices whatsoever.

- Admiral Ackbar, Mon Mothma, Han, Luke, they're all just so dumb. They do dumb things, say dumb things and only seem to constantly walk around with their heads in the clouds. And their ignorance is only a byproduct of the weak writing that forces them to be dumb so that the bad stuff can happen.

- But the dumbest of the dumb... Why would Han, after hearing that his wife, the mother of his children, was aboard a crashed ship and had only survived through the escape pod... And being sent in a mission to go and get her... Instead of RUNNING to his ship and flying right over, pause his rescue to go play Sabaac with Lando for 15 pages??? Not only that but for some reason that is no reason, he's betting the ship he loves more than anything and the ship he was actually going to use to go and get her! WTF!!!

I'll stop there, though I could go on.

Jedi Search I could at least make a case for... I can't for this. ...more

More 3.75, but I'll round up. While I didn't like this one as much as the first book, there were parts I enjoyed, particuarly the ending, the parts with the twins, the stuff with Exar Kun, and anything with Leia. I was a bit annoyed with the Han and Lando bickering over the Falcon and some of the seducing to the dark side of the Force (for Gantoris and Kyp) seemed a bit quick, but it was still a fun read. ...more

I liked the first book a lot, but this one just dragged on and on. It was boring and a burden to read. I lost interest after the first hundred pages. The Suncrusher is just far to powerful and really hinders the reading experience. I also found end to be dull and not very entertaining. Not climatic at all. I hope that the third and final book in the series is more interesting.
