Miles, Miles, Miles...swoon...

My first impression when I saw this book cover? Who is that hot guy--that can't be Miles, can it? Miles Davenport, that geeky computer nerd? Yeah, I knew that the McCloud's were working on him, beefing him up and training him to be able to hold his own physically, but what a transformation! What happened to his big nose? Surely the Miles of this book can't live up to that cover! I always pictured Miles as looking more like this:

Wow. I love this series. Miles has such a duality to his nature: sweet, loving teddybear, and steely, ruthless warrior. Definitely worked for me. Adored Lara and the psychic storyline too.

The tenth addition to the McCloud and Friends series by Shannon McKenna. Miles Davenport, who we met in previous books, now has interesting "powers". He retreats to the mountains and while there Lara Kirk gets into his mind. He has been searching for her and has been unable to find her. He finally comes down from the mountain and is determined to find her even more. Lara is held against her will by people who are experimenting on her. Somehow she finds a way to escape into Miles' mind.

While this is not the first book in the McClouds & Friends series it's the tenth, it is the first book in the series that I've picked up and I only felt lost for a short period of time due to all the villain's and their connections with other characters and each other.

Miles becomes a little obsessed with Lara after a failed rescue attempt, he dreams of her and through these dreams they make connection and Miles realise's Lara is still alive and mounts a one man rescue attempt to free her.

I reall While this is not the first book in the McClouds & Friends series it's the tenth, it is the first book in the series that I've picked up and I only felt lost for a short period of time due to all the villain's and their connections with other characters and each other.

I really liked Miles and how he was trying to sort himself out after whatever happened to him, he's completely changed and he is trying to control these changes and his well meaning friends haven't really been helping so he's secluded himself and in doing so he's managed to forge a mental connection with Lara and for a while thinks he's going insane and then eventually realises she is alive, he informs his friends and mounts, basically a one man rescue team and finds Lara. The book really takes off and changes from there.

Lara is amazed by Miles and in the beginning really likes him and it seems she's a great character who has suffered and overcomes so much. As the story progresses though I like Lara less and less. She becomes an annoying and slightly judgemental character, never really listening to Miles and causing lots of problems and just generally not being the character she was in the beginning. Which feels like a let down for the overall storyline because otherwise it's a good read and rather interesting in the way Ms McKenna writes such an interesting set of characters, circumstances and neurological matters.

Other than Lara my only complaint about the series is my lack of understanding about the villains in Fatal Strike. Clearly from reading it they've been in previous books or have previous relations with other characters but because I've jumped in quite far into the series I didn't get that and felt I missed a bit with these villainous characters.

Overall, I'm glad I read Fatal Strike and didn't let the fact that it's the tenth book in the series faze me. While I enjoyed Fatal Strike I'm not sure I'd read the next book in the series, I will however be going back and reading some of the earlier books to try and grasp a better understanding of the characters and series matter (what really the Midnight Project is and the complex villains). ...more
