I really enjoyed this vampire romance. The heroine, Cyn, is a strong smart woman who gets involved with the Raphael, Vampire Lord of the western US whenever she helps find a missing vampire as part of her job as a private investigator. Raphael is a very interesting character, as a vampire lord he is strong, arrogant and not afraid of violence to achieve his ends. He is also powerful and sexy, he and Cyn have an instant spark between them that leads to some hot love scenes.

I found the setting amusing – somehow the whole vampires hanging out in the ‘fun in the sun with the rich and infamous’ seems a bit incongruous. The author made it work.
In some ways this made me think of The Vampire Shrink by Lynda Hilburn. Raphael had the same feeling of ‘spooky cool’ that Devereux does. And his relationship with the heroine, Cyn, bubbles with the same intensity. Also, the politics of being the vampire Master swirl with murky shadows, ruth ...more

Hmm...another vampire series? Sure why not.
D.B. Reynold's Raphael was an easy read. I finished it in almost one sitting. There were just the right mix of mystery, action, and romance to keep me interested. Many of the elements were quite familiar: the powerful Vampire Lord, the feisty independent human, the circumstances that brought them together and the powerful attraction between the pair. Still Reynold's penned it well enough that it flowed quite well.

I read this primarily because it's set in Malibu, California which is my stomping grounds. And ironically it's because of the familiarity of the setting that I may have not liked it as well as others in this genre. In general I find contemporary stories hard to relate to and the familiar setting just seemed to compound my difficulties with suspending belief. But for whatever reason this book was just not my cup of tea ~

This is my first time reading a D.B.Reynolds book and I liked the characters and the story line. I'm looking forward to reading the next one.
