Chess's secret life and her Church life once again clash in City of Ghosts. Tasked by the Church for a secret mission and Bound by an oath not to speak about it without causing excruciating agony and eventually death, she has to investigate some grusome murders in Downside, her home turf. As well as her investigation she can't stop thinking about Terrible and her betrayal, hoping that he will forgive her and hoping that the case will once again bring them closer together.

4.5 but I'm rounding up. I admit it, it took me a book or so to warm up to Chess. Part of the problem is that she reminds me so much of some of the addicts that I've known, so she hits a little close to home. By turns I'm heartbroken for her, frustrated with her and can't decide if she needs a hug or a shake. The magic and mystery were here and although I did see one twist coming the rest of it kept my attention. But I have to say that what really glued my eyes to the page was Chess & Terrible. ...more
