★★★½☆ (This is a review of the audiobook.) When the opportunity to do this one as a “buddy read” came up, I thought I’d give it another shot. Especially since I was in a better frame of mind than last time. I also want to pick this series back up and thought I’d “refresh” my memory. I've been reading this book for months!!! I think I started it in 2008. I finally finished it today. I realized that, since I'm reading the suspense romance now, I may as well stick my toe back in the Midnight Breed pool.

Well ... not a great start. But I've been told by many, many others that the series gets better as it goes along. And I've read some interviews of Adrian and she seems like such a genuinely nice person that I've always wanted to support her efforts. See, it pays to be sweet. ;^ ...more

Gabrielle Maxwell makes a good living selling her photos as art, one night after a gallery opening, she decides to join her friends for a night out on the town. She quickly realizes she's not into the dark Goth scene at the downtown club they've ventured into and promptly makes her goodbyes. Things turn ugly however when she unwittingly falls upon a bizarre murder and barely escapes with her life. When she reports the crime to the cops they think she's crazy- even with the proof she has on her camera phone- although the photos were grainy at best.

Afraid she's becoming as insane as her birth mother, she eventually leaves the police station frustrated and confused, sure that the cops will not follow up on her wild claims.

Imagine her surprise when a cop shows up days later claiming he's there to investigate. She has no reason to doubt him and willingly gives her phone over to the darkly handsome detective.

Lucan Thorne is not a who he seems, however. He's a Breed- a descendant of a group of aliens who landed on earth an age ago and wreaked havoc destroying the people who populated it by feeding on their blood. Long ago, after witnessing his father tear apart his mother in a surge of bloodlust, Lucan took it upon himself to reign in the unruly bunch descended from original bloodsuckers. It has been war ever since... and it's about to get nasty as a mysterious leader of the Rogues- Breeds given over to bloodlust- has surfaced and wants nothing more than to bring down the group of warrior Breeds who have given their lives to keep the Rogues in check.

In a strange twist, Gabrielle and her artwork are smack in the middle of the mess and Lucan finds himself oddly drawn to the beautiful artist. When he discovers she's a Breedmate, one of a handful of human women born to mate with the Breeds, he wants nothing more than to run from her- for her own good- but circumstances align to keep them together.

Will Gabrielle be willing to run to Lucan for safety if she knows what he truly is? Or will he go against his better judgment and reveal all to keep her by his side when he knows in his heart he is nothing but bad news for the unsuspecting woman.

As bizarre as the whole Aliens as Vampires thing sounds, it surprisingly works in Adrian's Midnight Breeds series. The characters are enticing with strong competent women and hot alpha men who sizzle with chemistry. She's done an excellent job of world building here and the plot-although a tad done before with all the tortured heroes destined for one woman who will become their salvation- is well defined with a hook that will keep you coming back for more!

Although I liked this one, I wasn't as enthused about it as some of the other PNR's out there right now, but I'm chocking that up to it being the the first in the series ... 4 out of 5 from me. ...more

I must be in the mood for vampires, since I've been seeing these bad boys all weekend. Anyway, I was recommended to read this book a long time ago, around the time I was started reading J.R. Ward's BDB series, but opted out because of the similar themes. A few years later, I can still see the resemblance between the series's, but I feel like the execution varies greatly. Ms. Ward's books develops a strong sense of brotherhood and a distinctly recognizable vocabulary, while maintaining a 4.5 stars

Ms. Ward's books develops a strong sense of brotherhood and a distinctly recognizable vocabulary, while maintaining a significant difference between good and evil. Ms. Adrian expands the vampire lore to alien life-form status and introduces a cast and world that is far more...personable and relateable (are those two words synonyms?).

Gabrielle Maxwell, an orphan, is our introverted artistic heroine, with a strange affinity for vampire-infested areas and blood-letting practices. She's a photographer and stumbles upon a violent murder committed by Rogue. The Breed Warrior in question is Lucan Thorne, the leader of alien vampire warrior that protect the streets from Rogues - the vampires that have succumbed to bloodlust. Maybe it's his name, or the fact that he pretends that he's a detective while doing all type of ethically questionable things to our heroine, but the man is sexy as hell. Despite the dark circumstances and Lucan's aversion to commitment, they form a physical relationship, which leads to an obvious meet-the-other-warriors-and-their-mates situation, then saving the world, more lust, until finally they share a HEA.

The interesting thing about the other warriors is that 3 of the 6 (were there 6? I don't remember) already had breedmates. But this is where there is more gray area to develop on. (view spoiler) I realized early on that I have my heart set on Tegan, the antagonistic, reclusive, tortured-soul warrior. There's just something about him that makes me want to first give him a hug, and then get down to bed all hot and sweaty. Dsnte has a cool name, but I'll probably slap the boy for being so cocky all the time. His book is next, so I best be acquiring a copy. The others, we shall see.

Overall, a solid read, especially for PNR junkies. It's a good ride, I promise. Kinda reminds me of Nalini Singh's style, sorta. I don't know. This could all be in my head, but it's a good style.

LOVED this introduction into Lara Adrian's Midnight Breed series. I knew that I had to check out this series after seeing J.R. Ward's review on the cover. Anything Ward promotes has to be juicy.. right! After reading multiple reviews here on goodreads about the series and the first book, I was a little concerned that this was going to be a total knock off of Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood. This was a really good book and I thought the idea of where vampires came from was original. I'm excited to continue the series. The warriors are sexy, and I imagine each book probably focuses on one warrior and their romance. I think fans of J.R. Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood series will enjoy this series as well. ...more

Really nothing new to add to the vampire universe, but a fun read regardless.

I must add that the author's knowledge of Boston, where the book is set, was pretty terrible. As a Bostonian, her errors continually yanked me out of the story. ...more
