Wow!
Setting: Detailed and complex
Characters: Multifaceted and complex
Plot: Intense, action oriented and complex
Yes, I think the book was complex. Ward has to deliver a lot of setup and backstory in the first portion of the book; the reader is discovering 'the rules' along with the lead character, Jim Heron. Then you reach the cascade point - do not go past this point if you have cookies in the oven, children to pick up from school, or a job that requires your presence and active participation... ...more

If this review were based solely on plot, character development and suspense factor, the score would be much higher but for someone who is commonly considered to be the queen of paranormal romance, Ward leaves much to be desired in this novel. And when I say that I mean that the dialogue bordered on ridiculous. Ward is obviously trying far too hard to appeal to the younger generation with her attempts at twenty-something (and might I add masculine) slang. It's self-evident that she knows close t

Ward's new series is tantalizingly similar, yet different, to her Black Dagger Brotherhood series - there is one or two cameo appearances of the Brotherhood, almost like Hitchcock or Mel Brooks making a quick appearance in one of their films. The setting is still Caldwell, New York, and the local club scene is still the same - here, Trez has inherited The Iron Mask nightclub from the Reverend, and his employee Marie Therese is in the lead role as female protagonist. And Ward's writing style is r

I'm a huge fan of the BDB, so I had very high hopes for this book. What you get here is set in the same universe (I believe its Rhage who even makes a cameo appearance!) But this just didn't live up to my expectations. I enjoyed the characters, but the story was just ok. It may be that there was so much setup to get you into where she's going with the series that it didn't leave enough room for the exciting stuff, but I felt like it was lacking, especially compared to the brothers.

I am so glad I started this series. My prompting for finally reading this one is that I want to read Envy when it comes out soon. The reason I put this one off for so long is because I am not a fan of reading a book where the heroine is a prostitute. However, in this one Marie-Terese had her reasons and her number one was her son and also to punish herself. It was very interesting.

I wasn't quite sure what to expect from this book, but ultimately found it rather compelling.
Its not nearly as much romance (aka sex) as her other series, but what is made apparent is that Ward is actually really good at telling a story.
Oh its far from perfect, but the characters are interesting, the story flows well, and its a smooth read.
It did seem to me that she was fighting her slang tenancies from the DBD series with a few items slipping in, but it was actually quite refreshing to be mac ...more
