I could tell when I started this one that I was going to like the hero, Nathan Drake. The story starts out with some scenes of Nathan in action as a Special Forces soldier that illustrate what kind of man he is--brave and self-sacrificing, and looking out for everyone but himself. But I also thought that he got a little too self-sacrificing to the point that he practically gave up his own life and a chance for happiness in order to protect his supposedly genius brother Jamie and his dying mother I could tell when I started this one that I was going to like the hero, Nathan Drake. The story starts out with some scenes of Nathan in action as a Special Forces soldier that illustrate what kind of man he is--brave and self-sacrificing, and looking out for everyone but himself. But I also thought that he got a little too self-sacrificing to the point that he practically gave up his own life and a chance for happiness in order to protect his supposedly genius brother Jamie and his dying mother. His brother apparently had the I.Q. of a genius, yet he kept making one bad decision after another, showing he had absolutely no street smarts to go along with the high I.Q. After one particularly bad decision where Jamie gets in trouble with the law, Nathan feels he has no choice but to go AWOL to save his brother's naive butt, throwing away his own life and dreams.

Two years pass, and everything Nathan holds dear is now lost. He becomes a man on a mission seeking justice with nothing left to lose. That's when he meets Terri Mitchell, a beautiful ex- DEA agent who's now working covertly for the Bureau of American Defense. Their paths keep colliding while investigating the same people, although with different methods. She's investigating an organized crime ring that may be funding terrorists, and he's looking for the persons resposible for destroying his whole family's life. Neither Terri or Nathan trust each other, but they may have to work together in order to save the world from a great evil.

This book started a little slow for me, especially the suspense part of the plot. At times it got a little confusing keeping all the players straight and it was hard to see where it was all heading. But the scenes with Nathan and Terri really cooked! That alone kept me interested. As I got further along the pieces started to fall into place, and I got involved in the suspense aspect as well. I guessed the bad guy right away, but his total involvement at the end really surprised me, and the ending was really tense and action packed!

I have no complaints with the romance between Terri and Nathan. When they got together they were smokin' hot! Nathan, with his long hair, ripped body, protective nature, and muscle car, was the quintesential tough guy, but with a heart of gold. Terri, with her wild hair, curvy body and sometimes mouthy attitude, took no guff, but had a marshmallow heart when it came to Nathan. I loved these two together! And when Terri convinced Nathan that there were people in the world other than his family who could care about him, and that he deserves his own chance at happiness, well, it brought tears to my eyes.

If you haven't read any of the other books in the B.A.D. series, don't worry, this one can definitely be read as a stand alone. And if you have read any of the others, you'll find that this one is much more detailed, fleshed-out, and complicated than all the others. I was pretty satisfied with this read, and I hope this series continues on this new path! ...more

The book started off really good. We learn about Nathan Drake while he is on a special ops mission.He gets word that his brother is in trouble and that his mother is dying.
The next thing you know "Nathan Drake" is dead.
Terri enters the picture hurt from a job prior and consulting becuase no one wants her. As the story moves along "Nathan Drake" or "Jamie Drake" contiunes to sneak up behind or or in her house surprising her. She never really gets to see his face but she FEELS him. Just from thei ...more

Great read. It has all the BAD features - fascinating characters in a page turning plot. I read her BAD 7 [Whispered Lies:] first - it can be read out of order but honestly would have been better read in order.

Reminded me of Lisa Marie Rice's Midnight series, without the explicit sex descriptions. I prefer Rice's novels, but this was good. Nathan Drake was a little too self-sacrificing, however - his middle name could have been Jesus. And for a woman in law enforcement, Terri Mitchell was a little too obtuse and untrained.
