This is the second book by Patricia Gaffney that I've read, the other was Lily, and imo they're really good books. In this one Patricia Gaffney doesn't write the typical regency or bodice ripper, this was a different and new theme for me.

Rachel (h) was raised in a upper middle class family from a small town, her parents only asperation for her was to marry and marry well. Being the dutiful daughter that she was she was married off to her best friends father at the age of 18. Being the dutiful daughter that she was she was married off to her best friends father at the age of 18. Unfortunatly for her he was a sadist, he got off on her pain and humiliation. A week later he was murdered and Rachel was convicted and sentenced to 10 years in the goal.

Ten years later, she's let out of the goal but unable to find work due to the fact that she's a convict. When she's caught eating a neighbors apples she arrested again.

Sabastian (H) is titled, rich and bored. Nothing seems to intrest him these days. When offered a chance to sit in as one of the judges at the days trials he figures "why not?" .

When it was Rachel's turn to go before the judges something about her sparked an intrest in Sabastion. He couldn't figure out what it was, she was too thin, too beaten down, just a shell of a person, but it didn't matter really what it was. He was going to have her for his new play thing anyway. So he gave her a job as his new housekeeper, wich he needed anyway, and now she was his to torment in anyway he wanted.

I loved watching Sabastion, so bord with life, just doing more and more outragious things to find a spark of interest. What he finds is Rachel, so beaten down in life and such an easy target for him and his debatched ways....until he sees how the things he and his so called friends do and say affect her. And how the simplest little things that he and most people take for granted bring her such joy.....and yet she can barely show it. Use to ten years of no communication with others, not aloud to look at anyone, it's hard to break what has been hammered into to you for so long. I loved watching Sabastion, after he changed, help her to rediscover herself...not so much as heal herself because I think that she did that by herself, but just how much he wanted to give her and have her experience the good things in life. His main goals at first was to see how much torment she could withstand. Then as he falls for her his goals turn to making her laugh, smile and enjoy life. ...more
