Sometimes there are books so powerful and memorable that while dates, names, and circumstances may fail your memory, you will always remember where you were when you read it for the first time. That was my experience with Black Ice.

I always struggle with reviewing Anne Stuart's work. I want to come across as unbiased and honest, yet she has the power to weave stories together that leave me almost speechless. Black Ice left me speechless. Black Ice left me speechless. I have struggled to write this review:) The quality of her work in this book is unparalleled.

Anne Stuart is best known for her gamma heroes because they are her trademark. She can also write some pretty awesome light contemporaries, but it is with her darker books that I think her talent soars to another level. Black Ice is an example of one of her darker books.

Bastien Toussaint is a trained assassin. He is a ruthless killer and there is no sugar coating this fact. Chloe Underwood is a translator who is versed in many languages. She takes a weekend job to earn some cash and is innocently caught up in an illegal arms deal in which Bastien is somehow involved.

The thin line between good and evil blurs brilliantly in this novel. You learn quickly that good and evil are relative terms:)

Remembering this book still has the power to send shivers up and down my spine (and it's been almost 2 months since I finished it!) Bastien has the intent to kill Chloe. She is in the way and needs to be eliminated. He is very forthcoming about this and verbally threatens Chloe's life on several occasions. However, Bastien's actions speak very differently.

Bastien will do anything to keep Chloe safe. He will defy his training, instincts, and better judgement in order to assure her survival. I loved watching his actions contradict his words so consistently. He falls for her completely, yet resists her, again to keep her safe...even from himself.

This book had me completely captivated, and obviously still does! The reader is given glimpses into Bastien's childhood and the pieces of the puzzle tumble into place. The "whys" of why Bastien acts as he does fall away, and the only thing left is wonder, awe, and jealousy for Chloe and the love he has for her:)

Black Ice is a masterpiece and one that I will definitely be re-visiting.

2 words – VERY SATISFYING! -- I love it. This is a solid 5 stars for me. This is the first of Anne Stuart for me and I’m already a fan, sooo looking forward to reading the next books in the series. -- I went back to look at the overall rating and was surprised that it was in the 3’s range. Hmm..Interesting.

I love Paris. Reading this book really made me want to go back (for a visit -- that is -- too expensive to live). I love that it oozes the European Flair. Men in black, French lingerie, bague ...more
