Brilliant WW2 era spy novel. Furst's characters are full and realistic, his dialog is crisp and believable, the plotting intricate and logical. This book was a great, sprawling, epic story of a Bulgarian, Khristo Stoianev, recruited by the NKVD(Soviet secret police and forerunner of the KGB and FSB) in the lead up to the second world war. This story tracks the movements of Khristo Stoianev during the second World War. After his brother is beaten to death in his native Bulgaria he goes to train with the NKVD. They send him to Spain where he is then denounced by Stalin, helped by some of the members of his training class, he escapes to France where he fights in the resistance and helps the OSS against the Germans. Meticulously researched, though dense, historical novel revolving around a Bulgarian village boy recruited by the NKVD to fight facism in Europe from the early 30s thru WWII...excellent examination of all the forces dividing Europe, leading up to the war...important lessons for today's USA in regards to the forces of "Cultural Marxism" and political correctness...good read!!! ...more
