My favorite Furst novel yet. Beautiful telling of a French movie director as the German occupation is beginning. Riveting tale of how to survive in war-torn Paris. One of the interesting features of Furst's writing is that he often leaves the reader to fill in some of the details and connect the dots. This is a historical spy novel, love story and thriller all rolled into one. Furst makes you feel as though you are there, and it's easy to picture this as a movie while you are reading. A wonderful book. The writing and characters are fantastic. The plot ambles along, pulling the reader gently forward. Loved it on the second read, perhaps more than on the first.
