After reading this book, I discovered that there actually is a seven-gable house in Boston, MA that Nathaniel Hawthorne based his story on. The house belonged to his cousin, and there was family involvement in the Salem witch trials. The fact that Hawthorne was haunted by 'murders' that resulted from those trials makes it easy to see the influence family history had on his novel.
