After reading this novel I became more curious about the factural history Dumas based his tale on. This story is set during the period of conflict between French Catholics and Protestants (1627-28) known as the Siege of La Rochelle. The Three Musketeers along with D'Artagnan, a young musketeer apprentice, are protectors of King Louis XIII. They are a cocky bunch when it comes to defending one's honor.
