Following the lives of three generations Penelope Lively begins her novel with the story of Lorna set in 1935, then Molly, Lorna's daughter, and ending with Ruth, Molly's daughter. Love and loss are common themes as these women share sadness either by death or separation. The memories of loved ones help each of the women survive drastic changes.
