Frankie lived a hard life in Limerick! Although Angela’s Ashes is the story of a horrible childhood, the dark humor used to look back on the suffering reflects the author’s will to live and his positive outlook. Set in the 1940’s McCourt’s Ireland memories are traced from age 5 to 16. The memories begin with Frank’s father who rarely worked, and when he did spent all his money at the pub. Angela, the author’s mother, did the best she could to raise her boys despite grim poverty and sickness.
