I really liked this book althought it was really different. It was just an interesting sad story. The narrator tells the story in flashback. The reader first meets Ethan when he is 52 years old and he is a weathered, beaten, gnarled man. Everyone in town knows of his "smashup" and the narrator learns bits and pieces about it from the locals. But, then he finally has the chance to find out firsthand, from Ethan himself.
