In her Newbery Medal acceptance speech, Lois Lowry gives examples of students’ ideas to the ending of The Giver, and she explains that the “true ending depends on an individual’s beliefs and hopes.” My interpretation of the story is optimistic and hopeful. "The Giver" is a book that should make one think. In my opinion, nobody should read this book unless they are prepared to search for a deeper meaning. This is definitely not a surface book! In the Utopian society of sameness, there was one that was chosen to be different. This different individual was responsible for holding the memories of the world that existed outside the Utopia.
