I never knew about this historic event. Only through books like this will things we missed in history class be remembered. Hampton Sides tells the story of WWII’s greatest rescue mission from two views. One side describes the horrendous treatment of the American POWs in a Japanese prison camp. The survivors share what suffering they endured, and how they kept alive despite a high fatality rate among those at the death camp. Cruelty and a lack of respect for human life are traits of the captors. ...more

This was a great but difficult book to read. I learned so much history and it should be a textbook for history class. The people were inspiring and heart-renching. I recommend this book to anyone who want to learn more about the Pacific involvement in WWII.
