I was definately not impressed with this book. I found Mr. Conroy extremely verbose and I felt that the book could have been shortened very easily by removing irrelevant details. The characters are stereotypes and not good ones at that. I can not see this eclectic group being friends for a whole year let alone 20 years. Conroy includes characters from all walks of life in this novel .... orphans, star athletes, an aids-infected gay, oversexed goddesses of the screen, black cops, ex-nun, an abusive priest,etc... The story is told from the perspective of Leo (former nerd) gossip- writer. The amazing thing about these characters is the fact that most of them are lifelong friends. This book is very heavy on detail and description--almost overkill.
About midway through the book it does pick up-----FINALLY!!
I thought the story was going to go one way and then it went another. I liked the twist.
If you haven't read the book, I hope I don't give too much away by saying I think Niles knew exactly what he was doing when he locked the outside storage shed just before Hugo blew in. Who locks up a shed when a hurricane is barrelling toward you and you are staying put?
