I admire books that have bittersweet endings, and Dear John is one of them. John Tyree has a strained relationship with his quiet, distant father, and when he returns home on furlough he wasn't expecting to fall in love. But his and Savannah's relationship is kept only through letters and his once-and-awhile leave from the army, and they learn that maybe love isn't enough to keep them together.
