A long distance relationship is hard to maintain, even with letters and phone calls. Savannah meets John while he is on leave from a tour of duty. Not the type of guy she is accustomed to... older, a soldier, tattoos and rebel ways. She is an honor student working with Habitat for Humanity, while on summer break. Her course of study involves working with autistic children. The meeting seems destined, as the two become closer.

John's father has an obsession with coin collecting, and is very meticulous about his time schedule. The relationship between father and son has always been strained. When Savannah first meets John's father she shares her observations about his dad, “diagnosing” him with mild autism. She wants John to understand the condition, so that he can relate better to his father. At first John takes offense, but after realizing her intentions were pure his love for her deepens.

When John has to leave again, Savannah tells him that they will share the same moon wherever they are. They think of each other every time they see the moon. The letters and phone calls help them make it through the separation...UNTIL

So as not to spoil the entire story, I will skip to my most memorable scene …. the last one. As the title eludes John gets his “Dear John” letter. Time apart has changed their love … though it is still there for both, it is different. Time has also brought major change, happiness and tragedy into their lives. John knows he can't move back time, but when he secretly sees Savannah watching the moon one night he knows her love for him meant something and always will.

I'd like to imagine that a reunion will take place in later years. I'm not much for reading romance … so many stories seem to follow a written formula. I like romance that is unexpected, and unique. I like characters I can relate to or learn from. With “Dear John” I felt sweetness and sadness … bittersweet. Nicholas Sparks gives his characters impulsive actions that make their decisions heartfelt. ...more

I admire books that have bittersweet endings, and Dear John is one of them. John Tyree has a strained relationship with his quiet, distant father, and when he returns home on furlough he wasn't expecting to fall in love. But his and Savannah's relationship is kept only through letters and his once-and-awhile leave from the army, and they learn that maybe love isn't enough to keep them together. ...more
