India Opal is a 10 yr-old motherless child, being raised by her father "the preacher." Her mother left when she was 3 years old. She adopts a stray dog that was hanging around the Winn-Dixie Grocery store. This is why she names the dog Winn-Dixie. In fact she acquired her own name, India, because she was born in the country when her parents were there on a mission trip. She feels a close connection to the dog, because she is lonely after moving to a new place and leaving behind her friends. ...more
