[close] This is ONE of my favorite books! A thought provoking allegorical look at Heaven and Hell and the paths that lead to both. Lewis brings the reader along on a bus trip to where ever we want to go! We choose our destination when we decide "Thy will be done" or "My will be done." Often, I identify with the characters who find the journey to treacherous to continue. Lewis wrote The Great Divorce in response to William Blake's Paradise Lost where Sin and Death build a bridge between Heaven and Hell---thus the marriage of Heaven and Hell. Lewis believes there can be no combining of Heaven and Hell. "If we insist on keeping Hell (Or even earth) we shall not see Heaven: if we accept Heaven then we shall not be able to retain even the smallest and most intimate souvenir's of Hell."
