I enjoyed this instalment in the Mortal Instruments trilogy much more than the first. The questions and issues that I had left at the end of City of Bones were mostly addressed. And while I'd still like to see more of Alec, I was glad to see his sexuality wasn't glossed over. All of the relationships were better developed and I found myself caring for the characters. There were some interesting developments, and one fairly obvious though not yet resolved one.

Hmmm....what can I say?
When I finished City of Bones, I felt that I enjoyed the experience but I was in no hurry to continue the series. Now that I've read the second book, I felt a slight urgency to continue. Obviously that is a good sign, that City of Ashes is an improvement over the 1st book.
I like the world Cassandra Clare had created. I enjoyed the conflict and even the villain. However, I'm sort of blah with the love triangle in the story. I really have no opinion about Clary, and Jace is ...more

Clary Fray now knows that her past is a lie. Her mother hid her true identity, and Clary's discovery of her role as a Shadowhunter is tainted by the realisation that her crush Jace is in fact her brother. But with their homicidal father Valentine still on the rampage, Clary and Jace must learn to deal with their emotions and begin to fight back against him...and against the dangers from within the Shadowhunter's Clave itself.

Though the movie ruined pretty much every surprise this book had to offer it still seemed unfair to rate it less than 4 stars. I finished it so fast afterall, which for me means it was good enough not to bore me to sleep whenever I picked it up. And if I hadn't watched the first movie I wouldve had more fun and that's not the author's fault.

So again my expectations I think, were way to high. I still find myself drifting sometimes as I'm reading and realizing about two pages later that I have no idea what I've just read. It's not even that I don't like the story line. The whole situation with Jace, Clary and Simon, I find very interesting. I don't know maybe it's just me and I'm in a bit of a reading slump.

I think that all of the mortal instruments series was better the the Twilight series (sorry Twi-hards). Much more action and little romance but there is always room for sexual tensions.
