I enjoyed this book. I think that it would have been better had I read the first two books with Bones and Cat. They are interwoven in this story and there are bits and pieces that you just don't understand. However, with that aside, I think that this story is a good read alone. ...more

Another winner from Frost!
FIRST DROP OF CRIMSON is the first installment in the awesome new Night Huntress World series by Jeaniene Frost. Like her Night Huntress series, I was immediately drawn into the story and hooked on the characters. If you've read Frost's Night Huntress series you know how addictive it can be AND how amazingly written it is. I never thought I'd love another but Bones.. but WOW..Watch out Bones, Shade is in the house! ;)

Well I'm not really sad that I let this one sit on my shelf so long before reading it.

The Story:

Spade is friends with Bones, and has been since they were both human. Denise is friends with Cat and has been since Cat's 4 year separation from Bones. Full disclosure- I never liked Denise. More on that later.

The Good:

What I really liked was the fact that I got answers to two questions I've always had, that almost made a lot of the crap worth it! Almost. The two questions were:
1. What happened to Ti Well I'm not really sad that I let this one sit on my shelf so long before reading it.

The Story:

What I really liked was the fact that I got answers to two questions I've always had, that almost made a lot of the crap worth it! Almost. The two questions were:
1. What happened to Timothy? The fourth friend who was turned, the one that actually wanted it. (Turns out he has disappeared in search of Cain and is presumed dead as none of the friends have seen him in over 80 years.)
2. Who is actually Spade's sire?

The Bad & The Ugly
Let's face it besides the good most of this book was both bad and ugly. Denise, who I freely admit I never liked. I found her arrival in the series awkward and odd but was ok with it when I thought she'd disappear from the world like Timmie or Noah. She was just part of the vehicle to reunite Cat & Bones. But then her and her husband were still around, then he was killed and then she wanted nothing to do with anything vampire. Except for that one random night in the last book, you know so there was a reason for her to have Spade's cell phone number. What's more is that there is nothing interesting about Denise. She's a whiny heroine, that is obsessed with repeating tall the faults of things. "He's spending too much money helping me." "I want nothing to do with the supernatural world." "I was a wimp and a chicken and I let everyone get killed." Boo Hoo. Now she is branded by a demon and in order to save herself she must find her relative that cheated the demon his payment. and she has to keep being "so strong" and "so brave" while dealing with the demon essence that has been put into her. Except when she is being stupid and pigheaded and almost getting herself and everyone around her killed because she won't let the people she involved actually help her, but whatever.

Then there is Spade. My biggest pet peeve is when badass characters get all mushy because of love. Maybe because you never get Bone's POV you don't see it, but man Spade gets sappy constantly. He lacked that awesome vampire edge to his feelings and suddenly badass Spade is love sick Spade. And it doesn't match the Spade we have come to know. He has never expressed discontent with his life in prior book. Also he has never expressed distain for humans, not like he seems to show at the beginning.

More than anything though, there was no chemistry. Sure it's written, but you don't really feel like it's true. Overall, not a success, but I'm happy it's behind me and I can move forward now with the series and it will hopefully get better. Heaven help us all if we have to live through Ian's story. ...more

What a great start to a spin off series. The story certainly wasn't lacking in any way! I loved how the author tied in the other main characters as well... always good to see a little extra Bones! However, I thought Spade was a spectacular hero, and Denise was very strong considering everything that she had been through. The ending was great, but I won't give anythign away, I'll just say I shed a few tears... ...more

I enjoyed this book but not as much as I had hoped. I guess in my mind Bones and Cat are the ultimate couple from Jeaniene Frost and no others will compare. Although I do really like Spade and his sneaky ways to get what he wants.

It was another fantastic visit to Frost's world. Loved seeing Bones and Cat again, and loved how the story of Spade and Denise developed. The end wasn't unexpected, but still satisfying. I look forward to more of these "side" stories! ...more
