From the Bookshelf of Challenge Overload (PNR and UF Edition)…

[close] 3.5/4 stars. I'm a little undecided. This book is the first in the Dorina Basarab series, unless you count the prequel story "Buying Trouble". (Which I also read). Midnight's Daughter is another first person narrative and in the beginning I had a difficult time liking Dory. She seemed a little over-the-top angry girl. (There's a scene that she spends trying to get a magical footstool to stay put, that really started to make me crazy) Luckily though, as the story continued you saw some very good dimensions to her character. Reasons why she acted the way she did.

In this series you revisit so familiar characters. For instance, add Louis-Caesar to the mix and you've got magic. Louis-Caesar is just as I remembered him, but better. He's all quiet power that hides his inner-struggle. Plus you get some new insight into the Basarab brothers. Radu is quite funny, and Mircea... well he's still Mircea, which if you know me is never a good thing. But I know realize my dislike for him is solely about his involvement with Cassie. Because his character is just as secretive and manipulative as he is in the Cassie books, except here he takes a step back instead of forcing himself completely into Dory's life.

Of course with every one of the UF type books there is always the character with the questionable motives that seems to want a piece of our heroine, and this book is no exception. Caedmon, the Fey King, I will state for the record, I do not like him and I do not trust him. I have already mentally paired up Dory and Caedmon will do nothing but get in the way. And I can feel he is he type that will plant doubt in Dory's mind about what she thinks. He will use his power and his Fey wine and confuse her thoughts to reach his endgame. I just don't know what that endgame is yet.(All my opinion, mind you, I have no real proof)

Which is why I look forward to reading Death's Mistress.
