Bauby was the successful editor of Elle magazine in France until a rare type of stroke made him incapable of moving any part of his body but his left eye. He proceeded to write this entire book by communicating with said left eye, explaining every side and shade of his condition, his loss, his thoughts and feelings in a hospital room on the southern coast of France. This book has been on my to-read list for a long time, and I wish I hadn't waited so long to read it. At age 44, Jean-Dominique Bauby suffers a massive stroke, is in a coma for twenty days and awakes to be a victim of "locked-in syndrome." His left eye is his only functioning body part. It is through that eye that he not only views the world, but, through a complicated system, communicates to those around him.
