I really loved the first third of this book, especially the opening chapter. However, after that, the multiple story beginnings got me down, and the book started to feel more like an essay about reading rather than a novel exploring it. I was disappointed. Still, the individual stories were interesting enough and some sections were fascinatingly odd, like something Kafka would've written. ...more

Definitely a 5 in originality - I've never read a book before that made me ponder the act of reading so much. And it was a fun page turner, with cliff hanger after cliff hanger, which helped keep the momentum going just when I was getting a little bored with the philosophical passages. ...more
